Varroa Destructor - Treatment Options made EASY

Treatment Options made EASY

By: Chari Elam

I can speak from experience—the decision of which Varroa treatment to use can feel overwhelming.
What should I use? How does it work? Will it hurt my bees? The questions just keep coming...

Years ago, we created a simple method to help beginning beekeepers make more confident, educated choices when dealing with high mite loads. We called it the “3 P’s of Varroa Management.”

  • P = Preference – Are you “all options on the table,” organic-only, or treatment-free?

  • P = Population – The time of year matters. Are you in a Peak, Decreasing, or Dormant population phase? This directly affects which treatments are most appropriate.

  • P = Product – Once you’ve identified your preference and the current population phase, the choice narrows to just a few products—and sometimes, only one.

P + P = P (The 3 P’s—easy to remember, right?)

While helpful, this method still lacked product-specific detail...

Then came the Honey Bee Health Coalition’s “Decision Tool.”

It’s a game-changer—an interactive guide designed to help beekeepers make smart treatment choices. Just answer a few questions, and the tool recommends options based on your input. Simple, smart, and practical.

Once your options appear, click on any product to view a full info page. It includes everything you need to know—plus a video link showing you how to use it.

I really like this tool, and I think you will too! Even if you already have a go-to treatment, remember: rotating treatments is key to prevent Varroa resistance.

Take a moment to check out the Decision Tool—you’ll be glad you did.
