Common Questions about Texas Agricultural Evaluation
What does the bee setup look like?
Commercial hives may look quite different than expected as they are often rustic and do not look brand new like in the photo above. Typically commercial pallets hold 4 hives per pallet, so if you do not order in an increment of 4, you will have an empty space.
Will I get to keep the honey?
Through our precise scientific management, the bees on your property will not typically produce a significant amount of honey, which ensures our ability to keep our annual maintenance fee as low as possible. Instead you will be provided with a 5 lb bottle of our Desert Creek Honey as well as a 10% discount on all honey products in store or online.
Will the bees be on my property for the entire year?
Our bees will typically remain on your property for 8 months of the year, excluding the time they will be in use for pollination service off site. Most counties do not require immediate or constant placement of bees and can typically establish or maintain evaluation with the county by presenting your receipt and paperwork from The Bee Supply.
How many acres do I need to qualify?
Most counties in TX require a minimum of 5 acres and often max out the benefit at 20 acres. You can learn more about what your county requires here.
How many hives do I need on my property to qualify?
Most counties require a minimum of 6 hives to qualify. You can learn more about what your county requires here.
Do I own the bees?
Under this annual program, The Bee Supply will retain ownership and responsibility for all bees and hive materials. Through this program, you can establish or maintain agricultural evaluation without the financial expense or responsibility of necessary maintenance - we will do all of that. The only necessary requirement is filing the proper paperwork with your county.
How do I get started?
Determining the required number of hives for your county’s eligibility and placing your order here will be the first step in getting agricultural evaluation. Once the order is placed, you will receive emailed information linking to a form for you to complete. After that form is properly completed and returned, one of our representatives will reach out to arrange a site visit.
Texas Ag Exempt - Purpose for Honey Bees
The Texas Agricultural Tax Exemption is designed to support and encourage agricultural activities within the state. This program acknowledges the vital role of agriculture in the Texas economy and environment. By offering tax relief, it aims to:
- Promote Agricultural Practices: Encourage landowners to utilize their property for agricultural purposes.
- Ease Financial Burden: Help farmers and agricultural producers lower their operational costs.
- Support Rural Communities: Contribute to the economic sustainability of rural areas and the agricultural sector.
Benefit
The primary benefit of this exemption is the reduction in property taxes. This is achieved by assessing the land based on its agricultural value rather than its market value. Agricultural value is typically much lower than market value, leading to:
- Lower Property Taxes: Significantly reduces the annual property tax burden for landowners.
- Economic Viability: Makes agricultural use of land more economically viable, even in areas where market values are high.
Beekeeping Specifics
Why Beekeeping?
Beekeeping is recognized as an agricultural use under this exemption due to the critical role bees play in the ecosystem:
- Pollination: Bees are essential pollinators for a wide variety of crops. By facilitating pollination, they enhance crop yields and quality.
- Biodiversity: Bees contribute to the maintenance of biodiversity in agricultural and natural ecosystems.
- Honey Production: Besides pollination, beekeeping also contributes to agricultural productivity through the production of honey and other bee-related products.
